Overview
Much like St. Croix, St. John was inhabited by the Taino people from about 700 to the late 1400s. The island was resettled by the Danish West India Company in 1671.
Along with St. Croix and St. Thomas, St. John was purchased by the United States from the Dutch in the early 20th century.
Things to Do on the Island
Virgin Islands National Park
Since 1956, roughly 60% of the island has been under protection as Virgin Islands National Park—administered by the United States National Park Service. The park is world-renowned for its scuba diving, snorkeling, and miles of tropical rainforest hiking trails.
Annaberg Sugar Plantation Ruins
In the park as well, guests can explore island history by visiting the Annaberg Sugar Plantation Ruins where sugar, molasses, and produced during the 18th century.
